Da Vinci Robotic System: Revolutionary Surgical System

Da Vinci Robotic System is an FDA approved robotic surgical system which was created by an American company called Intuitive Surgical. The study of the human anatomy, which was done by Leonardo Da Vinci, was the cause of the creation of the Da Vinci System. Surgical robots, that are a part of Artificial Intelligence, are self-powered. They are computer-controlled appliances and are programmed to operate surgical instruments in a very expert and professional manner.

This system assists in performing surgery with the minimally invasive procedures. Without the aid of Da Vinci Robotic System, operations would require incisions of various sizes. These incisions would increase the risk of infections, prolong the healing duration of the wound and in some cases, could leave permanent scars.

How the AI Robotic System Works

The Da Vinci Robotic System is not entirely independent as it is controlled by surgeons with the help of consoles. The system’s primary components include a console which is operated by the head surgeon, a medical bed where the patient who is to be operated on lies, surgical instruments that are mounted on robotic arms and a 3D camera.

The technology reads and imitates the gestures made by the surgeon and converts it into precise and same range motions of the robotic arms that will be operating the surgical instruments on the patients. The surgeon can observe and carry out the surgery by viewing the surgical site through a camera that is fixed on one of the robotic arms. With the help of advanced sensor technology, the system reads the movements of the fingers and hands of the surgeon and transmits the data through the computer console to the robotic arms. The surgeon has maximum control over the actions of the robotic arms with seven degrees of freedom, making the procedure minimally invasive and thus safe.

Da Vinci System Safety

Robotic arms can be dangerous if the system did not have some safety systems, one of the most important safety features in the Da Vinci Robotic system is found in the motion sensors themselves where is the surgeon makes sudden jerky movements, the robotic arms lock movement and the system only restores movement when the surgeon follows the fault recovery mode. Moreover, the Da Vinci Robotic System will monitor the surgeon’s head movement and will not allow arms movement if it is not in the visual field of the surgeon. In addition to this, the motion scaling feature will move the arms by 1cm when the surgeon moves 5cm thus allowing for more precise movements by the robotic arms. Also moving the camera and the robotic arms is not simultaneously to reduce the risk of unintended movements.

Advantages of Da Vinci Surgical System

1.       Shorter hospitalization duration saves accommodation costs and time for the patients.
2.       Reduced pain and discomfort are one of the best advantages of robotic surgeries.
3.       Faster recovery time enables patients to return to their normal activities and routine in a short time.
4.       The size of the incisions made are rather small which reduced the risk of infections, short time for wound-healing, etc.
5.       Reduced blood loss and transfusions reduce the probability of complications that may occur in surgeries.
6.       The minimally invasive procedure of robotic surgeries results in less scarring.

Certain medical treatment methods, especially surgeries, may end up with complications. Even though these risks cannot be completely eliminated, Da Vinci Robotic System was invented to reduce the chances of these risks. Proper maintenance of this equipment leaves no chance of system malfunctions.

What can The Da Vinci System Do?

There is a wide range of surgeries that can be applied using the Da Vinci Surgical System, like Head and Neck Surgeries, Thyroid Surgeries, Thoracic Surgery, Cardiac Surgeries, Upper and Lower gastrointestinal surgeries,  Gynecological Surgeries, and last but not least Urology.

One of the many good examples of how the Da Vinci Robotic system has contributed to literally save lives is by turning a uterus cancer surgery into a surgery with fewer complications and much higher success rates. Oncologists are now able to remove uterus, cervix, ovaries and targeted lymph node to treat uterine cancers.

Benefits of the Da Vinci Surgical System

Many some of which are reduced pain with a lower risk of infection or complications smaller incisions and thus less scarring, less blood loss and a shorter hospital stay due to faster recovery!
