Pneumatic Tube System Once Science Fiction Now a Reality

Have you ever seen a science fiction movie where they send items using capsules that travel from one room to another? If you did then be aware that now such "Fiction" is a reality!

Where now patient samples (blood, urine, drugs & etc) can be sent using capsules that travel very fast from the nurse station to the laboratory where it needs to be analyzed. Such system is used in many other applications in various industries but we are concerned about its use in the medical field, where in many cases it can be life-saving.

The speed and accuracy at which such system works allow it to be very vital part in any advanced medical city, where large distances become a big issue for transporting samples. I worked in a medical city where they had a central lab and the main hospital and other specialized hospitals. The solution that the pneumatic tube system (PTS) provided was a real game changer as now samples are transferred at a speed that around 35Km/hr and are sent from any floor in any hospital to the central lab where the sample is analysed and then the results are sent via the hospital's server to the specialized doctor.

We as biomedical engineers are really looking forward to such systems to be used among more hospitals around the world especially in hospitals that are newly constructed. Moreover, we will be excited to see such systems become faster and capable of carrying heavier weights. There are many manufacturers of such systems and below we are listing some of them:
Sumetzberger
Aerocom
AirLink
Pevco
Colombo
Swisslog
Oppent
Air Log

(For other PTS manufacturers they are provided in the link)

  1. I think is very interesting and informative information, they can have this air driven system to drive more parcels from one hospital to another which are distance of even 100 km, where by they implement it under ground and increase the pressure, it will eliminate traffic jams delays and increase Clinical nursing efficiency, safe a lot of money in printing, travel costs, result getting lost, it's easy to trace if the result is stocked or lost in the capsule,I personally believe is a wood system to be recognised, going forward.
